Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
In an increasingly globalized world, the consumption of foreign films has become a prominent cultural activity in various parts of Nigeria, including Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State. Global media, particularly foreign films from Hollywood, Bollywood, and other international sources, have permeated Nigerian society, influencing local entertainment preferences and social norms. This growing consumption of foreign films has sparked discussions on its impact on local culture, values, and consumption habits. In Maiduguri, where there is a diverse demographic of ethnic groups, the exposure to foreign films has raised questions about how these films shape the worldview and cultural practices of residents. Studies have shown that foreign films not only serve as a source of entertainment but also play a role in socialization, shaping attitudes towards life, education, relationships, and social behavior (Aliyu & Musa, 2023). However, there is limited research that specifically focuses on the consumption patterns of foreign films in Maiduguri, particularly with regards to which genres are most popular and how they are perceived by residents. By examining the specific consumption patterns of foreign films in Maiduguri, this study aims to contribute to understanding the extent to which foreign films have influenced local culture, and whether there is a preference for foreign films over local productions or vice versa. Furthermore, this study will investigate the social and cultural implications of foreign film consumption, including its effects on youth behavior, family values, and societal norms.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The growing popularity of foreign films in Maiduguri presents both opportunities and challenges for local cultural preservation. While foreign films introduce diverse storytelling, new perspectives, and technological advancements, there is a concern that they may also lead to the erosion of local culture and values. Maiduguri residents, particularly the youth, increasingly gravitate toward foreign films, often preferring them to locally produced Nigerian content. This shift in viewing habits raises concerns about cultural identity, as well as the influence of foreign media on the socialization processes of young people. Despite the increasing popularity of foreign films in Maiduguri, there is limited empirical research on the patterns of consumption, the preferred genres, and the social implications of such preferences. The problem lies in understanding why foreign films have become so prominent in the city, how residents engage with these films, and what impact their consumption has on social behaviors and cultural attitudes. This study seeks to explore these issues by investigating the consumption patterns of foreign films among Maiduguri residents, with a focus on the social, cultural, and psychological effects of this trend.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it will provide a comprehensive understanding of the consumption patterns of foreign films in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and their impact on local culture and values. It will contribute to the body of knowledge on media consumption, cultural influence, and globalization in Nigeria. Furthermore, the findings will be useful for local filmmakers, policymakers, and cultural organizations, as they seek to balance the influence of foreign media with the preservation of local cultural identities. Understanding the social impact of foreign films can also help guide decisions about local film production and media regulation, especially in terms of promoting Nigerian content and ensuring that local values are adequately represented in the media.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the consumption patterns of foreign films among residents of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State. It will specifically examine the genres of foreign films preferred by residents, the frequency of consumption, and the social and cultural implications of this trend. The scope will be limited to the residents of Maiduguri, excluding rural areas and other local governments within the state. Limitations include the challenge of generalizing findings beyond Maiduguri and the difficulty in accessing a broad demographic due to socio-economic factors and security concerns in the region.
